As we are in the full swing of summer here in the Greater Philadelphia area, it is expected that our area will experience heat waves. Heat waves are classified as a period of extremely hot weather that lasts two or more days that have above average temperatures for that particular area.
Common sense tells us that it is important to make sure to stay hydrated during this time, stay out of the sun especially during the hottest times of the day and to avoid strenuous activities. But what else can we do to stay cool?
- Use fans
When you are in your home make sure to turn on those fans! Fans help circulate the air in your home. And if you have portable fans, open up those windows during the night to let cool air in.
- Head to the basement
If you live in a home with a basement, it will typically be much cooler than the upper level of your home. Simply put, hot air rises, cooler air falls so head to the basement for some relief if you have one.
- Avoid using the oven
Because of the very nature of ovens, it is a good idea to avoid appliances that generate heat. Stick to salads and sandwiches or any other meals that don’t require you to use your oven and make your home unnecessarily hotter.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine
While some of us may crave a cold beer or mixed drink when it gets hot out, it makes sense to not imbibe as both alcohol and caffeine act as diuretics and will dehydrate you.
- Go to public places
If the heat in your home becomes too much to handle, try visiting the mall, movie theater or library so you can cool off. Many times (especially if you live in the city) designated cooling off areas or stations are set up specifically for people to cool off during heat waves.
Lastly but most importantly, if you need your AC checked because it is not working correctly or not working at all , call Fahrenheit Heating & Cooling today!
